Annual Tutorial of Department of Media Studies

Kinnaird Media Society organized its annual tutorial on 19th January, 2010. It aimed at discussing the changing trends in Television Drama in Pakistan.
The panelists of the discussion included Savera Nadeem, actress and anchor of TV morning shows, Ayesha Sana anchorperson& actress, distinguished writer Hussain Shad, and the latest heartthrob on the block Affan Waheed.
The panelists discussed how have the drama industry flourished and what are its drawbacks and how it has gone through different phases and why is it inclining towards following foreign trends. “Now we find more amalgamation of cinematic trends in our drama, due to the fact that decline of film industry has lead many actors to turn towards the Television and these are not the actors but also the technical people joining the industry,” Ayesha Sana commented.
“Drama should reflect the present condition, culture and characters from the society to represent your own culture rather than following others”, said Hussain Shad.
Drama in Pakistan has flourished overtime and still dramas of high quality are produced in Pakistan with good script and commendable direction, Said Savera Nadeem. Kinnaird has been the first institution where I started learning and participating in dramas, she added.
“Now we are turning towards more dramas adapted by novels that seems as we have less script writers available, pointed out by Ms Shazia Saeed, Head Department of Media Studies. However she added that rather than only focusing on the negative side and criticizing soap culture, we should not forget the positive aspects of the industry and the talent that we have.”
The seminar served as an enlightening podium for students because they were capable enough to clear their minds about the misconceptions associated with the media industry.
At the closing of the seminar students asked questions from the panelists and received complete and scrupulous course of action. Ms Shazia Saeed, Head Dept of Media Studies thanked the organizers and panelists and presented them souvenirs and certificated of Appreciation.
