Kinnaird College organized Inter Collegiate Debating Championship 2009-10
Kinnaird College Debating Society organized an Annual Inter Collegiate Debating Championship 2009-10. The participants included Aitchison College, Lahore School of Economics, UET, GCU, SICAS, Punjab University, AIMC, LGS and LACAS. It was a three day event with Pre-Quarters being held on Friday (Jan 29, 2010); Quarter-finals and Semi-finals on Saturday (January 30, 2010) and the Finals on Monday (Feb 1, 2010).
This competition provided students, an opportunity to debate on a diverse range of topics. The topics for the English rounds were: “This house believes that judiciary is justified to take over the executive”, “This house would ban mobile phones in educational institutes.” “This house believes that global warming is over-rated” The topics for Urdu debates included: “This house would separate politics from education” and “This house would allow Iran to develop its Nuclear Program”.
The judges in the English Final Round were Mr. Haider Azhar, Mr. Rehman Azhar, Mr Anwar-ul-Haq, Mr Mueed Jaffri and Mr. Zubair Nabi, while those for the Urdu Final were Ms Saira Malik, Ms Habibah Hussain Rizwi, Mr Siddique Awan, Mr Rehman Azhar, and M. Uzair Mehmood. The chief guest for the event was Ms. Effat Shah (Former Advisor Kinnaird College Debating Society).
After 3 rounds of English debates and 2 rounds of Urdu debates, Lahore School of Economics (LSE) and Salamat International Campus for Advanced Studies (SICAS) school qualified for the English Finals and University of Engineering & Technology (UET) and Punjab University (PU) for Urdu finals of the competition.
In the English final, Team LSE was proposing the motion and Team SICAS was in opposition. The motion under discussion was “This house believes that IPL has politicized cricket.” The winner of the English Trophy “Rabia Javaid” from SICAS and the best speaker declared for the English category in the tournament was Ashab Shahzad from SICAS. In the Urdu final, Team UET was proposing the motion and Team from Punjab University was in opposition. The motion under discussion was “This house believes that the energy (electrical) crisis in Pakistan is not artificial.” UET was declared the winners of the Syed Tajammul Abbas Urdu Trophy, while the best speaker for the tournament in the Urdu category was Fahad Ali Kazmi from Punjab University.
