Dr. Tehseen Aman – a brief introduction

Dr. Tehseen Aman (2nd Nov 1943 – 31st August 2021) was a world renowned scientist, specializing in Chemistry. Her name appeared in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World in 1997, a book that contains biographical information on notable people of the world. For her research in the field of Chemistry she was awarded a gold medal by the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (2002).  

She was a passionate researcher. In a world without Google and emails, she used to communicate with the editors of international journals through post.  Despite sitting miles away her work was internationally recognized. Her research in Chemistry was published in multiple international peer-reviewed journals including Analytical Letters,  Mikrochimica Acta, Microchemical Journal, Materials Science Forum, among many others. She was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences (USA), Royal Society of Chemistry (London), Pakistan Oil Technologists Society, Pakistan Academy of Scientists, Pakistan Society of Biochemists, Pakistan Biological Sciences Society, and the Psychological Society.

After retirement she joined Lahore College for Women and later Kinnaird College (2007-2011) as a professor. She wanted to help strengthen the research programs of these institutions and bring them at par with international standards. She was instrumental in setting up the research component of the curriculum at Kinnaird. She also taught Environmental Sciences and Research Methods to both undergraduate and MPhil students and had a strong research component in all her teaching.

She was the author of a book titled ‘Genius’ (1983) which was a philosophical endeavor and highlighted how a person’s ego can lead them to discover their genius. She was also a poet. Her poems were compiled in a book titled `God’ (1991). She wrote multiple Op-Eds for newspapers including The Daily Times in which she highlighted the environmental challenges of policies in Pakistan. 

Biography: She was born in Jullandar, Punjab, India on 2nd Nov 1943. The family arrived in Pakistan in 1947. She was the daughter of Dr. Nazir Ahmad and Shah Jahan Qureshi. She married Rana AmanUllah Khan on 20th December 1974 and had two children Socrat Aman Rana (8th Dec 1976) and Shan Aman-Rana (4th Oct 1980).

She completed a BSc. from Lahore College for Women in 1963 and an MSc. in Chemistry from Punjab University in 1965. This was followed by a PhD in Chemistry in 1989. She also held an MA in Philosophy (1969). She served in multiple leadership roles during her time as a student. She was the Lady Councillor (1964-65) and President Women Organization (1964-65) at the Punjab University.

She started her career as a research assistant (1966-68) at the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR). She later served as a Research Chemist (1968-72), Research Officer (1972-1979),  Senior Research Officer (1979-89).  She also briefly served as the Director General of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR). She retired as Principal Scientific Officer (1989-2003). 

Scholarship overview /Terms and conditions

  • The Scholarship is is both “Merit and Need Based” and will be offered to those who wish to pursue an MPhil degree in

i. Environmental Sciences or ii. Biochemistry 

  • The student will be funded for the 2 years of the study program and will cover the tuition fee (up to PKR 200,000 of one M.Phil student every year.
  • For the continuation of the scholarship the student is required to maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.00/4.00.
  • If the student is unable to get this CGPA in her first semester, her scholarship will be on-hold for the next semester and will only be released if she gets the required CGPA in her second semester. The scholarship will be withdrawn if she fails to get the 3.00 CGPA in her 2nd semester.
  • The scholarship application form will be available from Dean Postgraduate office. Applicants are required to submit hard copies of the application form along with the supporting documents to Dean Postgraduate programs by the given deadline. 
  • Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the Committee constituted by the Institution The decision of the Committee shall be final and cannot be challenged.
  • The scholarship will not cover any financial assistance for any extended period of the academic program (such as fee for repeating/ improving course/semester freeze or/and delay in Research thesis submission etc)
  • Students availing any other scholarship/ financial assistance are not eligible for this scholarship.

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Must secure admission and pay registration fee in any of two M.Phil. Programs in Kinnaird College: i. Environmental Sciences or ii. Biochemistry
  • Have proven financial need
